Getting Back Here

Well darn! Dang it! Done a lot of drawing since I last posted here. A bit puzzled about how I seemingly tried to consolidate at least two of these into one. I feel I am getting closer to producing something and perhaps learning how to finance sculptures. Body starting to give out! I have a torn meniscus in my right knee. Half a day teaching construction methods and cutting ceramic tile yields a really sore forearm that feels like a torn ligament. I have found out things that are staving off the aging process like Advanced Bionutritionals "Perfect Aminos" and "Circ O²". I also imagine that keeping the company of cats has kept me from being depressed. Even with, I explored anti-depressants over a year or two, and found they weren't for me. The worst of which was Effexor. I had to taper off 10% at a time, then re-equilibriate to that for three weeks in order to drop down again. That took a year, and at the end counting beads out of a capsule created cravings to smoke tobacco again, causing me to dig out my old briar pipe bought in Ireland. Then I had to quit smoking again. That took a month and the chewing gum mixed with other gum to kill the taste. I probably haven't rambled like this, in a more personal vein, but I have also written elsewhere that I thought a more appropriate place where being confessional could be taken more lightheartedly.

It is hear that I also wish to say hello to an old friend who kept a blog. You are well thought of, and even missed now, 40 years later.

Radius Milling Tool #1

Totally handheld in front of my PC. A four scene animation of the tool I have halfway built in the 25' x 25' square behind my woodworking shop. I chose to carve interior geometry because I want the model to be the sphere from which to cast off. I probably would have a less difficult time carving the exterior geometry and casting molds off of that.

I have tried making video with my hand-held smartphone. Here is a rudimentary animation from Google Sketchup from a piece I designed of two eighth-sphere triangles merged together.

"Small" Models

It's been a while since adding anything new here. I have re-assessed making a smaller model of the 1/8 sphere pieces which describe the outline of a cube in three hatching pieces.

Public Sculpture

Here is another extrusion piece I've played with over the weekend.

I've been thinking of making them playground friendly.

I also played with creating a reminder illustration on Phidean proportions. One in inches,

and the other in the easier to layout metric.

This is something I had in mind today.

Spherical Triangle Assemblies

 These I estimate might stand about eight feet high.

Tube Cube

Re-assessment of "Tube Cube" with a truncated spherical base. (It's hard to illustrate unless the camera is set at ground level.) It rises four inches at the center and tapers off to ground level radially at ten feet. It is hard to chose the best setting for this piece on a compass setting for best shadow effect. I have set the cube basically twenty degrees from due north.

Hollow, Component-Assembled Sound Abatement Walls

I've taken another look at a hollow version of a component assembled sound abatement wall that would be filled on site with dirt.

These are basically eight foot by eight foot, four feet wide at their narrowest portion that present an undulating line forty-five degrees across the corners diagonally.  

A Study of Technique in Lamination (EPS -Extruded Poly-Styrene..."Styrofoam")

With this study I stumbled upon a technique which slices layers - giving up vital measurements - with just one command, the extrude button.

Here is the piece with the corners removed.

Additional edges trimmed away and colored.

Integral part situated in front of a "Slicer". Think of one of those potato slicing machines from the Sixties. The rectangle has regularly spaced bars that when intersected with the object deliniate where it passed through the model.

And there they are, measurements approximating where the shape will end up after adding Bondo.

Revisiting Sphere In Cube

I am going to try a model off this design at four feet.

My intent will be to make a negative mould carving foam layup with a rotary tool that is set in one swivelling position, from which I will make a casting.

Potentially I could create an assemblage out of that to form this at 8 x 8 x 8'.

Playing around with old ideas for a decorative fence today.

Wavy Triple Block

A little bit of exercise on this one. Started out with individual blocks set in a certain pattern, then simply tripled one finished block as a component.

Quick Sketch This Morning

I had to finish Helprin's "A Winter's Tale" this morning before getting on with life, but a multiple cube crystaline jumped right into my imagination right after. Weather changes have made my shoulder ache too, so I could not really rush things.
